Crucial Conversations to Create and Sustain More Equitable Workplaces

We are in the midst of a global movement to root out racism and racial injustice. For too long, people have been discriminated against because of their race. Organizational leaders are looking for solutions to ensure their policies, procedures, and cultures—which is to say their people—are inclusive of and fair to everyone.

At VitalSmarts, we’re listening and learning. We don’t have all the answers, but we want to help leaders build safe, just, and inclusive cultures. And we believe a few conversational skills can help. If anything, they're an important place to start.

Registering will get you access to both events. If you can't attend live, we'll send you the recording.

200% Accountability: How to Create and Sustain a Just Culture

Tuesday, July 21
12:00 pm ET
(11:00 am CT, 10:00 am MT, 9:00 am PT)

Inequality and injustice don’t happen in a vacuum. Incidents that harm or oppress others are rarely about a single bad actor. More often they reflect a permissive culture where those who observe injustice say nothing. For example, Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck is part of the story. Three officers watching haplessly is another. If real change is to occur in our organizations, we must start by addressing silence and collusion.

Join Joseph Grenny, coauthor of Crucial Accountability, and his colleagues from The Other Side Academy to learn what a culture of 200% accountability looks like, feels like, and sounds like.

Discover how a few accountability practices enable hundreds of repeat offenders and addicts to create a culture of rigorous integrity. It’s this kind of culture that can support and, sustain programs on diversity, inclusion, and equality. You’ll learn:

  • How to create a culture that values truth over power
  • Five actionable strategies to create a culture of 200% accountability

Over the past six years we’ve trained tens of thousands of students, and we’ve learned that the vast majority of people have never had a conversation about bias with a coworker. Occasionally, people make an attempt, but it often ends badly. As a result, they decide to never broach the subject again. This trend is alarming. If we can’t talk about a problem, we definitely can’t solve it.

Join Mike Rognlien, Crucial Conversations trainer and This Is Now Your Company author, and Brooks Scott, Crucial Conversations trainer, to learn how the latest research on unconscious bias intersects with Crucial Conversations skills, and how organizations can use these in tandem to reduce bias in the workplace.

Discover tips and techniques to manage your own biases, as well as tips for responding to bias in others. We all want to be a part of a solution, but in order to do so, we also have to acknowledge the ways we may actually be contributing to the problem. You’ll learn:

  • How to become a better scientist of your own behavior as it relates to bias and/or prejudice.
  • How to respond to bias—your own and others’—in ways that start conversations, not end them.
