After 25 years with her organization, Marion applied for a cabinet-level position. She had the right skillset and understood all the roles and processes she would support. She moved through the interviews until she was one of two final candidates, but the other candidate got the job. Sometime later, when Marion’s supervisor announced her retirement, Marion again applied. She was perfectly suited for the role. Again the choice was between her and another candidate. Again the job went to someone else.
To say Marion felt frustrated is an understatement.
But Marion resisted the inclination to tell herself a story of helplessness. Instead, she decided to have a crucial conversation with the hiring executive. Following that conversation, she didn’t get the job she had wanted, but rather something much more valuable.
Watch Marion above recount how the skills from Crucial Conversations helped her gain career clarity and avoid getting stuck. ◼
